The Register reports that a study by the National Literacy Trust states :

By the age of 34, "68 per cent of men and 70 per cent of women with good literacy skills are co-habiting or married, compared to 52 per cent of men and 60 per cent of women who find it difficult".

And finally, a mere 50 per cent of the literacy-challenged say they're “satisfied with life”, compared with 78 per cent for the literate, while the latter also "tend to be better paid and smoke less".

I felt I should say something inappropriate like "that's because female Lit students are invariably hawt!", but then I decided against it. :)

I must concur, as my current general level of happiness and satisfaction came about largely due to my ability to string more than three words together at a time. How else can one easily flirt with several women at once except via lines of text like these?

Still feeling very seedy, age must be catching up with me. I think I shall skip Fidel's and go straight home and curl up in bed with some kiwi porn this evening, perhaps even leaving work a little early.

The porn is for research purposes, of course! I recently picked up several pieces of published erotica written by New Zealand authors largely to get a feel for the field. This has included Avocado and Astride by Christine Leov-Leland. I've read Avocado, I was impressed at how well the author captured New Zealand dialogue, and the feel of Kiwi baches, even if the characters themselves weren't exactly your normal Kiwis, and perhaps the addition of an Indian back-story to the male lead made it a touch more interesting to me, though I thought the Rastafarian part was a little over done.

I found it interesting to read about different characters than the sorts I normally associate with in fantasy and sci-fi, and also, I enjoyed experiencing more "deep IC" writing than I'm used to, it's so completely different than, say, the Mike Stackpole Battletech novel Natural Selection I read previously. I am wondering though, as this is erotica by women for women (the male lead is just so obviously a female fantasy), if this style of heavy internal character monologue is more common in modern chic lit as a whole? It's not in the more historical novels I've read, this is way beyond the Brontes for example.

Anyway, maybe tonight I shall be Astride.

Thinking of those in Texas , as [livejournal.com profile] danjite brought this to my attention.
..Persons not heading evacuation orders in single family one or two storey homes will face certain death... (!!!)
...Waters will exceed 9 feet for up to a mile inland...
...one quarter to one half of all small and medium sized trees will be uprooted or snapped.
Wow.

I was reading an old White Dwarf today, and discovered the following passage of alien anal rape from Ian Watson's Deathwing.
A coccyx of bleached bone jutted into space, bearing the sphincter at its tip like a quartet of triangular haemorrhoids clutched within bands of livid muscle. Where the heads of these scarlet protuberances touched, a tiny hole still puffed acidic discharge. The nose of the torpedo impacted rupturingly in that meatus, wrenching its tissue open, burrowing deeper, convulsively with thrusts of its jets as the Fists clung to stanchions.

The torpedo rocked as a shaped charge on the nose-cone erupted, blasting a passageway ahead. Swiftly the spring-loaded cone itself petalled open, becoming a fourfold hatch pressing fiercely against the inner anal walls in the manner of a surgical dilator. “Out, out, out!”

This rectum of the alien ship curved rightward, a-slosh with steaming cloacal fluids, banded with slowly pulsing purple peristaltic sinew. The high shriek of escaping atmosphere had already diminished to a whistle as the injured anus cramped tighter, reflexively, around the girth of the plasteel troop-carrier which had penetrated it.
Kids read this stuff! :)

Passed on from [livejournal.com profile] divalano (who has an entry :) ), go and vote on which images you most appreciate, and at the same time help select the charity to whom the proceeds of the book will be passed on to. You could almost say that you're being socially responsible while looking at porn. At least that's what I told my girlfriend!

It's Friday, so I had fish and chips for Tea.

[livejournal.com profile] seraphs_folly gave me some money to buy myself some whiskey for my birthday over here (even though she said she'd already bought me a pressie!), so this evening when picking up milk and bread from the local Waitrose I thought I'd check out their liquor section on the off-chance, not expecting much, and OMG!

This supermarket here in Sheffield has a better range of whiskey than most specialist bottle stores in New Zealand! It has all the standards, Talisker, the GlenLivet, Glenmorangie, Laphrohaig, and tons of others, many of which I haven't tried! And cheap! Most of them are just £20! Less than $60! Even the Special GlenLivet is only £25!

So I chose a whiskey I haven't had before called The Peat Monster from the Compass Box Whiskey Company which was on special for £21 , down from £27. Then, when I went through the checkout the operator said I could get another 20% off if I bought six of them! It's described on the box as
Big, Peaty, Smoky. A superb, balanced and delicious combination of smoky, peaty Islay malt whiskey with rich old Speyside malt.
Here's a review. The Whiskey Guide tells me
Peat Monster is bottled at 46%. It is not chill filtered and contains no colour additives. The whisky is composed primarily of Caol Ila 10-11 years old and Ardmore 12-17 years old. The whisky is married for several months in ex-bourbon First Refill American oak casks. The marrying allows the intense smokiness of Caol Ila to be beautifully balanced by Ardmore’s milder, sweeter notes.
I'll find out on Sunday when I get to open it. I am seriously considering bringing some whiskey home at these prices. And then da guys will have to do "The Whiskey" again! :)

Last night G and I found a hilarious TV show on one of the comedy channels called Badly Dubbed Porn. It consist of badly made porn movies being voiced like Kung Faux was by British comedy actors. I'm pretty certain I heard Dawn French in there.

Right now we're watching a sci-fi show called Charlie Jade, which was made in South Africa for Canadian television, and G tells me his twin brother M was an extra one of the episodes.

Shame [livejournal.com profile] seraphs_folly couldn't make it to Welly this weekend, but I hope you guys all have a great party tonight!

[livejournal.com profile] elfs brought up the fact it was National Pornography Awareness Week in the US.

I thought "Oooh! almost missed it!", and clicked on the link thinking to find a site run by the porn industry promoting it. I was dissappointed.

Does that make me a bad man?

The good news from my returning from India is that I have lost weight. I proved this today by being able to do up the top button on my purple Lip Service PVC pants for the first time. Admittedly, my spare tire still bulges out around the top in an unappealing way, and they are still far too tight to actual wear out anywhere, but getting all the buttons done up is a definite improvement!

Last night there was lots of sex on Sky 1. I reckon it was a conspiracy!

I watched Downunder Exposed, a series which was played pretty much all in one hit on Sky One about Steve's Erotica Expo in Auckland.

The surprising thing is that I gained a lot of respect for a certain blonde Californian porn star named Evan Stone. He was just extremely competent at dealing with people, organizing things, and was also damn funny at times. Looking at him work and seeing the way he dealt with crowds and individuals, you could tell that he'd be competent in any job that involved dealing with people. He also went out and staged a one man counter-protest against the religious wowsers protesting outside the venue.

In the final episode, where Steve Crow was supposedly trying to make a porn film, it seemed like Evan Stone was the one get everything done on set, from getting the lighting right to trying to reassure the new girl from NZ. The funniest part of watching that episode was realizing that the Jenni's Angels team was probably more competent than the people doing the porn shoot. Just little things like the lighting that Stone had to fix, which I'm sure someone in our team would have picked up on before wasting several minutes filming.

Another moment was what the current partner of Tia Carrera (I think it was) said while he was helping her fix her costume for the stage show about how he always wondered what she saw in him, when all the way through the series it was obvious he was looking out for her all the way. And he was supposedly a known rock star in his own right, though I don't think I know of him. Still I understand his sentiment. :)

Overall, while it was obviously made primarily for titillation like these things usually are, and there was plenty of that, I think someone in the team tried very hard to actually make a good documentary out of it, one that actually showed the subjects as human.

After that, they played Seymour Butts reality T.V. show, which was actually quite funny seeing as in it he attended his high school reunion, I'm sure people can imagine the inherent humour in that concept!

All through these shows I was chatting with [livejournal.com profile] seraphs_folly on gChat, so I would have to say there was a certain level of, um, frustration involved!
