The first thing that interested me was the subject line :

Such a meaningful email! I must analyze it now and try to determine what it means for my life as an action hero... )

(ten points to anyone who knows where that title comes from)

So I am now Back At Work. As before, and probably because I haven't been around for a while, there is nothing for me to do, except to study for my Java J2EE Architecture certificate, which is largely a marketing exercise, seeing as I probably know more about putting together such applications than most of the people who wrote the course.

But that gives me the opportunity to once more waffle on again at people, and as I'm not paying for internet access by the minute, and as I'm back on my own computer rather than some annoying internet cafe's one, so things, such as my LJ client, and search tags and stuff, are readily available for my use, so I feel like writing again.

Yes, only six hours at work, with breaks for lunch and picking up some second-hand Shadowrun book, and already I'm bored. Must get on with KapCon LARP work.

But in the meantime, a random observation on Bruce Willis' body of work. It's huge. And pretty damn good overall. I ended up watching Twelve Monkeys with [livejournal.com profile] seraphs_folly on hotel cable, and thought about it then. From Moonlighting, through the loveable Hudson Hawke, and the Die Hard franchise, and various more outré works like Fifth Element, Pulp Fiction, Sixth Sense, and Unbreakable, he seems the perfect guy to play numerous roles.

Did anyone else notice that Twelve Monkeys has the same plot as the Terminator, only with a different villain?

The enjoyment of Willis was emphasized to me when I watched two Bruce Willis movies I hadn't even heard of before on the plane from Singapore. In the first, 16 Blocks, Willis plays an aged cop with a drinking problem and bad veins (surprise, surprise!) trying to take a criminal from a precinct lock-up to testify to a grand jury in a courtroom just 16 blocks away... It was pretty standard stuff, like a good TV cop drama, but it was entertaining, and never seemed forced or unrealistic.

The other movie I watched was Lucky Number Slevin. Yes, Slevin. The best way I can describe this film is to reference Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Imagine such a film starring Bruce Willis, Lucy Liu, Morgan Freeman, and Ben Kingsley.

Actually the plot is completely different, but it it's the style and nastiness of the movie that reminds me of those English gangster films. This is a New York gangster film done in that English style with a great cast and a great bunch of characters. From Willis' hardly speaking assassin, "Mr. Goodkat", to Ben Kingsley's "The Rabbi", a Jewish mob boss. "Why is he called 'The Rabbi'?" "Because he is one." The Rabbi has a son, called "The Fairy" . "Why is he called 'The Fairy'?" "Because he's homosexual." Things are quite straight forward really. :)

Actually, all those are supporting characters, the lead is Josh Hartnett, who also starred in the director, Paul McGuigan's earlier film Wicker Park, if that helps anyone! Throughout everyone mistakes him for one Nick Fischer.

Lucy Liu does a commendable Veronica Mars impersonation as the girl / coroner who lives next door. Never thought of Lucy as the sort who giggles in bed and makes penis jokes with strange men, but if you want to see a giggly Lucy in bed this is the movie for you. She reminded me of [livejournal.com profile] seraphs_folly actually. There ya go love, Lucy Liu is like you! (Scooby Doo, where are you?) or at least her character Lindsay is.

The twist is slightly predictable if you're clever, but it really doesn't matter, because although you may get the main twist, not everything that happens is as predictable

BTW, both of those movies were released this year! According to IMDB, Willis has done five movies this year, with another four, including the next in the Die Hard franchise, which he's producing being released next year. He gets to play assassins a lot though!

Will see people at Kazu's yakitori this evening as organized by [livejournal.com profile] evie_fae!.

I think several people I know would love this album : Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys by a "Rogues Gallery".

As a hint, I'll tell you that the "Rogues Gallery" includes Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Bono, and Sting
