Open source poetry
Aug. 16th, 2005 01:30 pmI bought the 50th issue of Linux User & Developer primarily for the complete copy of SuSe Professional 9.3 on the attached DVD, but I found that to me the $20 price tag worth it for the article Diving for Perls by Richard Hillesley the editor of the magazine. In it he discusses code and poetry, and opens his article with reproduction of Claire Fauset's Steal This Poem. Go read the poem if you haven't already.
I'm tempted to suggest a new meme, everyone should write their own version of this poem, as exhorted by it, and thus spread the idea of open source thought I suppose I ought to do it first though, and I don't really have the time left this lunchtime.
The article is also combined with a lovely blue-green sea artwork from Pauline Amos, a small segment of which is reproduced on the cover of the magazine.
I'd love to reproduce the article here, but I can't be bothered typing it in so instead I'll just add a short quote from Ada Lovelace that is quoted in the article :
Maybe it's time for gR1mj4Ck (remember to use the Spanish pronunciation of 'j') to wax his deck and ride the 4th Wave again. Or for gh05tm4Ch1n3 to go ahaunting. Information wants to be free and it wants you to know it!

If you can't give me poetry, can't you give me poetical science?I'm beginning to be inspired by software and geekery again. I've just realized that now I don't have a woman wanting me to come to bed early, I can get back into real coders' hours and write into the wee hours, and stop wasting time in sleep.
