Using Emergency Resources
Jan. 5th, 2008 07:13 pmSo, on Friday my work lap-top blue screened. The hardware is OK, so I suspect that it's either just Windows, or it's a combination of Windows and the encryption software Pointsec that work wanted installed.
It will be interesting to see if they will be able to recover anything from the machine with the encryption in place. Either way I expect I won;t be doing any work when I go back on the 14th, I'll be spending my first week back rebuilding a working environment! Oh well, they will insist on using Microsoft OSs and encryption. I wonder if the loss of hours cause by a company's silly technology choices will ever be measured.
Luckily, I had just the day before backed up my personal files to my 500Gb external drive. The annoyance will be that I've lost all my Half Life and Quake save games, and I'll have to download the programmes again from Steam.
I am reduced to using my server as a desktop, so maybe the web-sites hosted here will serve a little slower than normal. At least with Google Browser sync I still have all my links available, mail is still available via Gmail, and Firefox is the same etc. But I can't play Half Life or Counter Strike anymore. Anyway, my work laptop couldn't run Half Life 2 properly, so I'm going t buy myself either a huge large laptop (like the HP Pavillion HDX or ASUS G2S) or an even more powerful desktop.
Unfortunately it looks like I'll probably have to end up getting one with Vista installed, but maybe later I can upgrade it Windows XP. I actually seriously considered buying a Mac this time, or getting a no-OS machine and installing Ubuntu or something, and frankly the only reason I'm not is that I want to play the cool games on it. If I can sort it out I'll probably make the machine dual boot once I get it.
