Just Another Manic Sunday
Nov. 12th, 2007 03:44 amI've just got back from having a croque monsieur pannini, a double choc muffin, and a caramel macchiato at the local Starbucks. I have to admit to becoming addicted to caramel macchiato and croque monsieur panninis as a breakfast since coming here. Starbucks is at least a coffee shop that does the sort of things I like, the only other choice seems to be the Costas chain which does more traditional English faire, and if anything, is even more commoditized than Starbucks. As I sat there looking out the window, I realized there was a shop on the other side of the street called "Collard Manson". But it was haute coutiere accessories, not what it sounds like!
While watching the passing people, I realized that many of them, including some in uniform, had come from the day's Remembrance Day services. It seems a lot more people here are interested in it than back home. Then again I may be wrong, I'm not usually in town on such days. This morning, before I went out, they had a live, televised, moment of silence with the Queen by the Cenotaph. It was followed immediately by Wrestlemania, which seemed a bit naff to me, one moment remembering the horrors of violence, the next glorifying it.
I splurged on some decent coffee for the flat, and some Greek clear honey, the only clear honey available that wasn't in a squeezy tube.
I also discovered the local goth shop. I have never seen such a collection of yummy boots in one place at one time! From classic purple Docs to red vinyl thigh length New Rock-style ones (I don't know if they were New Rocks, but they looked like they would be). Most are in the £100 - 125 range, i.e.: around $300, but are very tempting. Also they have all those multiply zipped jackets and "bondage" pants you see on all the web sites.
I prolly looked completely out of place wandering in with my plain trousers and t-shirt, but at least I had my black leather trench. Not to mention being old, as everyone else in there was young and trendy, though the shop assistant (classic plain black, pale skin, older goth, would have looked right at home at a KAOS party) was friendly enough, especially when I told her I was from overseas and had never seen such a collection of yummy boots in one place before. Seems it's not common even here, and she was quite proud of their selection.
Nearby was the Gash shop. It's advertised as "female-friendly", and has a MySpace blog which has a Flash video showing you the shop. It wasn't open, but it was advertising in the window Personalised Panty-Grams in the window. "Put your own personalized message on a pair of our panties!" :) And they are selling franchises. whaddaya say ladies o' my flist, wanna start a franchise? :)
I will follow this post with one containing pictures of where I'm living now, probably for the next four weeks, unless they decide to send us home. We moved in on Friday. When we arrived from work at around 5.00pm, we were greeted by the two female cleaners who had been cleaning the flat since 11.00 am! They were full of chatter about how messy the last lot of occupants were, and very friendly though at least one of them was obviously exhausted from her work, and one of them was also pretty hot, in her tight grey sweats. I'm pretty sure she knew it too! I love work, I could watch it for ages. :)
They continued working as I set up my internet connection (wi-fi, there's a hub in my bed-room), and my colleague G set up his X-Box. G was planning to immediately head off to see his uni mates living and working in Manchester, leaving me alone in the apartment for the weekend, but he was setting up the X-Box for me to play with. Hot cleaner made more points by discussing X-Box games with G knowledgeably.
I had a lovely chat with
seraphs_folly Saturday morning, as she was going to bed. Then I went out shopping, got general foodstuffs and some GW collector's guides for £6 each, and bought some Christmas presents. When I got back I got some washing done and felt pretty sorted. I took some photos and planned to do a post later in the arvo when the sun wasn't so reflective on my lap-top
So, the reasons I didn't post yesterday are two fold, firstly I played Halo 3 till much too late Friday, and then hooked into the story, played Halo again from when I finished up washing (damn, the controls are at the same time both amazingly good and difficult to get a handle on), until about 4.30pm when I realized I was actually quite sick. At first I thought it might be from playing too much Halo, as I was nauseous, my head hurt and I had a fever, but I think actually it was because I had relaxed, and a general cold I had been fighting off got thru while I was concentrating on fighting The Flood.
I went to bed and fell asleep almost immediately, then I awoke about 7pm and took a couple of aspirins, and went back to bed and slept till around 11pm, when I was awoken by many loud bangs, chatted briefly and made a few LJ comments, looking out at the stormy night, and the fireworks on the hills, and then went back to sleep until about 5:00 am when I was awoken by either the storm dumping water outside, or ravens tapping on the window, rolled over and fell asleep again till about 9.00am. So I had almost sixteen hours sleep, and I think I needed it. I dreamed busily, but cannot remember any of it. Felt much better when I woke up this morning.
giffydoll, I have not seen any "Galaxy" chocolate over here so far. I have seen "Milk Way" which IIRC is similar?
Finally, now that I'm settled in here, and have had a chance to rest, I need to think about arranging a visit to London to catch up with all those who are there want to! I am going to see New Model Army here next Sunday, so that's out. So,
ext_59057,
jnicholson, perhaps
vizi or
drowninghail, what do you guys recommend as to meeting up? I could get a train down there, but suggestions as to where to stay and the like are welcome. Also, sooner rather than later would probably be good, as although I'm still booked for just before Christmas, I may not be here that long if things actually get done at work.
Pics to follow, am enjoying G's collection of music, but there is a large raven watching me from the balcony's edge as I type this...

Date: 2007-11-11 04:44 pm (UTC)If we're going to set up a Greenstone dinner as Keith suggested, I might even be able to find out which trains from you guys!
As to email, well, I haven't got my older address book with me, as I found out when I intended to contact other people, but mine's this journal name at gmail.com

Date: 2007-11-11 03:17 pm (UTC)Sunday 16 December VNV Nation play at Slimelight. Getting back for work on Monday would be a pain. They may be playing elsewhere in the Uk this month as well.
The weekend inbetween (December 8) there is another band I am thinking of going to see as well, followed by a night with a goth floor. Slimelight has its own LJ at: http://community.livejournal.com/slimelight/

Date: 2007-11-11 05:02 pm (UTC)The con turns out to be DragonMeet (http://dragonmeet.co.uk/). Turns out that John Kovalic and Andy from B.I.T.S. (British Isles Traveller Support) are going to be there. And it's organized by the SLA Industries guys. Will try to get more details and find out how to register. They're not that organized it seems. :)

Date: 2007-11-12 12:27 am (UTC)Ditto on the offer on a place to crash. I have a spare lounge and am about a 45 minute tube journey from the centre of London.
If you're going to DragonMeet then I'll most likely bump into you there. It'd be rude for me not to go seeing as members of my games club (Phoenix Games Club) will be running stuff there.
I'll be away for the weekend of 24 November (going to Greece), and I have a funny feeling I've signed up to go to another con - but I'm not sure if that's before, or after Xmas.
