This morning, on the train, I read Neil Gaiman's Odd and the Frost Giants. This is Neil's contribution to World Book Day which is "the biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of books and reading".
"Odd" is a classic Gaiman story, a solid real-world grounding to begin, that contrasts the fantastic later on, gods, giants and animals, thoroughly predictable in all but perhaps the final denouement and yet still amusing, small nods to the adult readership, and a happy ending. I thoroughly recommend spending the few minutes it takes to read it, and it's a great introduction for younger readers too. I have some copies here for some people. Must try and get them to them.
During the day I got thoroughly disillusioned with work, as it became more likely that I was going to be drawn into another morass of governmental idiocy, only this one in our own country. What do you call a Unisys LINC application automatically syntactically translated into Java with no thought of a design change? We call it "Lava", and like lava, once it cools it solidifies into a mass of intractable , unworkable, basalt that kills everything trapped underneath it, and prevents new growth for many years. Oh for a random five million so I can retire!
This evening, I decided that for AUD $950 on sale the Damascus FX1 FlexForce™ Modular Hard Shell Crowd Control System is a must have!
Last night, the start of Half-Life 2 : Episode 2, had a wonderful intro sequence of Alyx Vance blowing things away. Is it wrong to fall in love with a game character? :) I think I'm beginning to understand the "fans" in Megatokyo! Of course the fact that she bears a certain resemblance to
seraphs_folly, in her head band and short dark hair, probably helps a lot. Can't wait to bring her home to meet the rest of the family, but first, after having escaped from City 17 we gotta get to the White Mountains.. I mean Forest... waita minute... there's something familiar about this plot...
Oh, and Happy Birthday
ferrouswheel!
