The N33d 4 5p33d
Oct. 18th, 2005 03:23 pmSo this is comin' at you folks via my new cable modem.
I even get a fixed IP address, which means I won't even need a domain name to set up and access my home webserver, and won't have to muck around with a dynamic DNS. Wants to play! But really should get on with work.
Heh, as usual, as soon as I'm connected my firewall is blocking people trying to connect on port 445 (Microsoft SMB, Sasser exploit ), 1025 ( officially assigned to network blackjack, but hijacked by Microsoft for their default RPC port, and port 1026 (officially assigned to calendar access protocol, but again hijacked by Microsoft for their popup messenger service), all well known holes in Microsoft's software. Luckily, I configured my router to deny all incoming ports before connecting to the cable modem.

Re: static IP
Date: 2005-10-18 05:25 am (UTC)Not neccesarily the cheapest, but nice and easy!
I get the cable because I'm in the old Saturn coverage area, it's not available everywhere. As our reception is crappy we've been on cable Tv since it was installed.
Re: static IP
Date: 2005-10-18 09:25 pm (UTC)we're currently paying $110.
well, it's only $70 for DSL, but then there is the $40 for the required phone line that we really don't use or have an interest in.
it's Xtra which gives us 10Gig of transfer per month but upload speeds are really limited. and no static IP, which really discourages me from hosting my own domain.
what i want is what i had in the US. a reasonably fast connection, at least one static IP (we had 4 in the US), and no house/land line.
we have the VOIP phone for calls to the US and our mobiles for local calls.
and cable, well, we don't even own a television.
::sigh:: the search continues
oh well, at least i can get DSL here.
we waited for nearly two years to get DSL in Chiang Mai ... we finally got it the last month we lived there. which was helpful for making our arrangements to leave the country.

I'm basically paying the additional $25 for the cable TV, though you do get 10Gb instead of 5Gb, whereas as I get a staic IP and a good speed.
But does Telecom effectively not charge you for local Gb? Paradise only charges 10% of the local Gb you download.
