During Earth Hour the other night Wellington actually used more energy than average for the time of year, in stark contrast to Christchurch's savings of 36.6 megawatt hours, which equates to about 8.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Had to pass on this little gem from [livejournal.com profile] elfs in which research shows that homophobia is directly associated with physical homosexual arousal. That's sure to annoy the right people! *giggle*

It was unseasonably cold in Wellington at 10pm on Saturday, which may explain some of it. Also, comparing 10pm in one place to 8pm (still daylight) in another is possibly a little .. umm.. something.

I didn't see a lot of publicity for it either - wondering how many people even knew about it.

Yeah, I didn't notice the difference in times being compared, and Wellington wasn't officially taking part as a city. But I thought saying something might generate some thought anyway. :)

Hopefully no-one did anything daft like using their fireplace or candles - I saw something somewhere with some people talking about a lights-off party they'd had, serving food from their... oven.

Saw the tv footage with loads of people in ChCh square - I wonder how many folk drove into town to see the lights go off?

Colour me a little cynical about mass events.

Yeah, ditto about the cynicism, but hey, at least it gets people thinking a bit, and something good might come out of it.

Like maybe more people might think "Why do we have these lights on anyway?" or something.

After all, all these lights, makes it really obvious for invading space elephants to know where to drop the rocks. :)
